Words to Walk With – New Language Resource

The IPLO Program is developing a language resource and look forward to your participation. Our goal is to support language revitalization by introducing one phrase per week in as many Indigenous languages as possible.

The weekly phrases for the month are posted in the Sway – Words to Walk With located on the Cultural & Language webpage.

We invite participants to use a single phrase consistently throughout the week when greeting children, speaking with coworkers and families, answering the phone, and during daily interactions. Repeating the same phrase throughout the day and week supports natural learning and retention. By the end of the week, the phrase often becomes part of everyday use.

In the second week, a new phrase would be introduced while continuing to use the first phrase. This process would continue weekly. Over the course of a year, children, families, coworkers, and participants could become familiar with 52 commonly used phrases in their language.

Below are the weekly phrases for 52 weeks. If you are able, we ask that you transcribe any phrases you are familiar with and email to iplo@fireflynw.ca . Please be sure to indicate which Indigenous language each phrase is written in. These phrases are commonly used in classroom and community settings. Download, print and post to share with your staff and families!
